Today i am going to attempt to learn how to make a flash video player similar to youtube’s. im using a couple of tutorials that i have found here and here i am using these tutorials because they show how flash as3 can be used to create a full screen video player and also how to use an xml file to load videos. This means that when its time to use the final work it should be just a case of encoding all the videos to flash and changing the xml file.
I will upload my progress later.
This is one idea that i have had for the degree show. It is based around the idea of “Thinking outside of the box”. The images on the left show the brochure cover which also doubles as the back page. when handed out the brochure would look like it was inside of a box (top left image) but when unwrapped the brochure would be outside of the box and would double as a desk pencil holder. The brochure would be bound with a single rivet at the top left corner.
For the exhibition the idea would be to use coloured tape and layout graphics or doodles or illustrations around the room and up the wall. the center piece would be a box that was cordoned off and large black lettering on the floor stating “BEWARE THE BOX”. Maybe to add a bit of fun to the event people could be given a box to stamp on and at an elected time everyone would squash them to symbolise stamping out bad ideas.
George and I have been concepting ideas.
One which sticks out is the idea of digital/analogue and the contrast that can be used visually. also this title encompasses all of the work that is produces for the exhibition.
Here are some ideas for this concept
This concept was proposed to the exhibition group but they didnt like it so back to the drawing board
on a side note. i also proposed an interface idea to the for the exhibition website, it was loosely based on the digital analogue idea.
The idea was to have an interface that looks like an old 50’s jukebox.
in the exhibition literature their would be a 3 digit code that corresponds to each student. Then to view exhibition work of students you would type in the code. The arm of the jukebox that usually moves and selects a vinyl record would pull out a file that would open into a full screen preview of the student work.
The group seemed quite interested in this idea. But until we have a solid concept for the degree show it will be difficult to tell if this will be used.
the ability to view books, also try and impart the tactile feeling of turning the page. British library turning pages example
be able to pan and zoom in on the artwork to see the fine detail. ie photoshop zoom and pan using spacebar.
play movie clips
show flash based works
show images
hierarchal navigation system that can go to courses then drill down to the people on the course.
random work displayed when no department is selected.
a start animation that plays while loading the site to stop the viewer feeling like they have to wait for the site to load.
optimization so that load times are kept to a minimum especially wen dealing with large image files. Note to self: research into the possibility of using a low res image that when zoomed in on will load a higher res version for viewing.
simple yet elegant user interface.
photo for each student to make their space personal (NOT PASSPORT PHOTO).
quote of statement from each student to help make the space more personalised.
The work should be the main focus on the site. ie navigation should be hidden where possible to maximise the artwork area. maybe move the mouse to the edge of the area to bring up the controls.
background of webpage should be a non distracting colour. enabling the viewer to be undistracted.
If i have missed anything could you leave a comment. Ta
Degree Show Promotional Material.
Dave Potts
George McClure
Design, Multimedia and Graphics
Purpose:
George McClure and Dave Potts intend to create a multimedia solution, spanning both screen and print, for the purposes of promoting and cataloguing student’s work. This material is to accompany the University of Sunderland’s graduate design exhibition at The City Space, to be held on 17th June 2010.
Both George and Dave will collaborate on preliminary research to enable the creation of graphic identity that is suitable to span both print and web based applications. Then conduct research into forms of promotion that other higher learning design establishments have previously employed, as well as self-promotional material from industry based design studios. Finally using all the gathered information and studies, George will produce a print based solution for the exhibition, and Dave will produce a web-based platform to display current student works.
Collaborative Research Aims:
To research into current and past work that pertains to design exhibition promotional material.
A questionnaire will be constructed to discover current students opinions and expectations of the promotional material.
Communicate with The University of Sunderland’s Public Relations representative to find out any requirements and limitations imposed on the project.
Design an overall concept for the project that effectively communicates over print and web based applications.
Personal Research Aims:
Dave:
Investigate ways in which web based technology can be used to create an online gallery
George:
To produce practical research into traditional printing techniques.
To Explore hand-drawn typography
To generate a professional publication that will push the boundaries of conventional degree-show material.
Final Outcome:
Both George and Dave will produce a research blog to be submitted for assessment.
George will produce a print based solution for the University of Sunderland’s graduate design exhibition, promoting and cataloguing student’s work.
Dave will produce an interactive web based solution for the University of Sunderland’s graduate design exhibition to display all the student works.
Deadline
23rd March 2010
So George and myself will be putting together the Design Exhibitions print and web literature. George is creating the book and i will be creating the website.
